Northern Valley EMS, or NOVA, is the second largest volunteer non-profit ambulance organization in the Lehigh Valley providing first responder emergency medical services to North Whitehall Township, Washington Township, the Slatington Borough, the Walnutport Borough and parts of Lowhill Township. As a result, NOVA now has four ambulances, responds to over 2,800 emergency dispatches annually, is run by a board of directors comprised of emergency personnel and members of the community, has a vibrant auxiliary, encompasses some 40 volunteers and nearly 50 paid full and part-time personnel, operates two Advance Life Support stations on a 24/7 basis and requires an annual budget in excess of $1,000,000.

You won't be surprised to know that the ambulance corps did not just up and start running! It is the result of the merger of three storied organizations. In the beginning there was the Slatington Community Ambulance Corps (formed in 1936) operating out of Slatington, the North Whitehall Volunter Ambulance Service (formed in 1966) operating out of Ormrod, and the Slatedale Ambulance Corps (formed in 1970) operating out of Slatedale.

In early 1998 the Slatedale and North Whitehall Ambulance Corps combined their organizations named Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services by then volunteer EMT Frank Alexa. Joint operations commenced on January 15, 1998 and NOVA became the primary provider of both Basic and Advance Life Support Services (BLS and ALS) to the residents of Washington and North Whitehall Townships. Soon thereafter in June of 1999 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognized a merger of the Slatington Ambulance Corps merged into NOVA.
